I’m coaching/judging a debate tournament for the next few days, so blogging will be light. Enjoy your weekend.

First Round
Most readers won’t care about this, but Mary Washington KS – our top policy debate team – just received a first round bid to the National Debate Tournament. In practical terms, this means they won’t have to compete at the district qualifying tournament to get to the NDT. In a broader sense, it’s pretty exciting [...]

Kilmer Watch
Sickness and a debate tournament at the Naval Academy prevented me from posting over the weekend, but now I’m back to full strength. While I doubt anyone outside of my immediate circle of friends cares, the tournament was pretty awesome, culminating in Mary Washington victories in both the JV and varsity divisions.
In completely unrelated news, [...]

I’m judging at a debate tournament this weekend, so blogging will be pretty light.

Go Mary Washington
Mary Washington KS is debating at USC this weekend while the rest of the team stays on the East Coast at JMU. I think KS has already qualified for elims; best of luck to the entire team.
UPDATE: KS beat a Northwestern team in double octafinals; now they’re debating Harvard. Go, fight, win!
UPDATE II: Yahtzee – [...]

Beat Harvard
They’re through! Mary Washington KS defeated Whitman and are now debating Harvard in quarters. I’m pretty sure this is the first time any Mary Washington team has reached the quarterfinals of a major national circuit tournament, but I can’t say I’m surprised that KS made the breakthrough. It’s incredibly thrilling to get in on the [...]

Go Mary Washington!
Mary Washington KS and Mary Washington SS (one of our younger varsity teams) are debating at Wake Forest’s Shirley Classic this weekend. It’s the last big tournament of the semester – here’s hoping they do some damage in elims. Go Eagles!
UPDATE: KS is 4-0 on the day; no word yet on SS. Also, we beat [...]

Go Mary Washington!
Mary Washington KS is debating at Harvard this weekend – widely considered the most competitive tournament on the national circuit (shit’s expensive; most schools can only afford to send their best teams). No word yet on their record, but qualifying for elims is going to be pretty tough. Go Eagles!
UPDATE: 5-2 going into round eight [...]

Backlash
Having already written the best “federalism good” impact turns known to man (if you’re a policy debater, throw your hands up!), Steven Calabresi now turns his attention to the coming Obama Administration apocalypse:
A whole generation of Americans has come of age since the nation experienced the bad judicial appointments and foolish economic and regulatory policy [...]

Cosmetic Changes
Via Culture11, it seems I should scrub that scruffy-looking picture of me debating in college. Attractive women are hereby encouraged to submit “profile pictures” for the blog.

Weekend Hiatus
As a free discourse evangelist, I’m putting my money where my mouth is and judging a few college debate rounds this weekend at the lovely University of Richmond. Posting will be light, but while I’m gone, I invite you to ponder this article on postmodern debate strategies from the Chronicle of Higher Education. The entire [...]

Today Was A Good Day
Mary Washington KS went on a tear at Kentucky, the second national circuit policy debate tournament of the year. They finished up 6-2, beating teams from Michigan (twice), Kansas, Miami of Ohio, Dartmouth, and Georgetown. Qualifying for elimination rounds is quite an accomplishment, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a deep run tomorrow (quarterfinals [...]

Worthy Links (II)
David Cay Johnson, author of Free Lunch: How The Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expenses (and Stick You with the Bill) proposes a sensible-sounding alternative to the bailout. More significant, however, is his take on our collective response to the crisis:
Taxpayers should be troubled that on Capitol Hill and at the White House the [...]
