First Round
Most readers won’t care about this, but Mary Washington KS – our top policy debate team – just received a first round bid to the National Debate Tournament. In practical terms, this means they won’t have to compete at the district qualifying tournament to get to the NDT. In a broader sense, it’s pretty exciting [...]

Go Mary Washington
Mary Washington KS is debating at USC this weekend while the rest of the team stays on the East Coast at JMU. I think KS has already qualified for elims; best of luck to the entire team.
UPDATE: KS beat a Northwestern team in double octafinals; now they’re debating Harvard. Go, fight, win!
UPDATE II: Yahtzee – [...]

Beat Harvard
They’re through! Mary Washington KS defeated Whitman and are now debating Harvard in quarters. I’m pretty sure this is the first time any Mary Washington team has reached the quarterfinals of a major national circuit tournament, but I can’t say I’m surprised that KS made the breakthrough. It’s incredibly thrilling to get in on the [...]

Go Mary Washington!
Mary Washington KS and Mary Washington SS (one of our younger varsity teams) are debating at Wake Forest’s Shirley Classic this weekend. It’s the last big tournament of the semester – here’s hoping they do some damage in elims. Go Eagles!
UPDATE: KS is 4-0 on the day; no word yet on SS. Also, we beat [...]

Go Mary Washington – Beat Berkeley!
Having qualified for elimination rounds by the skin of their teeth (5-3 record), Mary Washington KS is now debating the number three seed from Cal Berkeley. We’ve beaten this team before, but if they do manage to pull off an upset, it will undoubtedly be a near run thing.
UPDATE: Godd*mn hippies. We’ll get ‘em next [...]

Go Mary Washington!
Mary Washington KS is debating at Harvard this weekend – widely considered the most competitive tournament on the national circuit (shit’s expensive; most schools can only afford to send their best teams). No word yet on their record, but qualifying for elims is going to be pretty tough. Go Eagles!
UPDATE: 5-2 going into round eight [...]

Today Was A Good Day
Mary Washington KS went on a tear at Kentucky, the second national circuit policy debate tournament of the year. They finished up 6-2, beating teams from Michigan (twice), Kansas, Miami of Ohio, Dartmouth, and Georgetown. Qualifying for elimination rounds is quite an accomplishment, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a deep run tomorrow (quarterfinals [...]

Georgia State – Days 1 & 2
Four rounds into the tournament and Mary Washington KS is up 3-1. This morning they beat teams from Dartmouth and Trinity, but after a grueling twelve hour day, further updates have been pretty sparse. In an eight round tournament, most teams have to go 6-2 to qualify for elims. A lucky few will sneak in [...]

Just when I thought I was out . . . they pull me back in
I’m currently banging out a file for my alma mater’s policy debate program, whose (sole?) varsity team will be attending the Georgia State tournament this weekend in Atlanta. For those of you unfamiliar with the odd subculture that is collegiate policy debate, Georgia State is the inaugural national tournament of a season that runs until [...]
